At Quality Certified Transmission here in Bloomington Indiana we service, repair and replace all forms of drive trains and CV Joints. With the advent of front wheel drive cars popularized by the 1959 Mini, drive trains have changed significantly. Most new cars now have transversely mounted engines using half shaft driveshafts to transfer the torque from the transmission to the wheels. These half shafts utilize CV or Constant Velocity joints to handled the up and down movement of the suspension.
Here are some Drive Train symptoms and notes about possible problems.
Outer CV Joint boot is torn and allowing the grease to come out and debris and water into the joint. The debris causes excessive wear in the joint and the water causes rust. Both will cause the CV joint to fail. If caught soon enough the boot and grease can be replaced. Often though the entire half shaft will need replaced.
This is another symptom that boot around the CV joint is busted. With the boot broken the rotation of the tire/centrifugal force will spread grease around the inside edge of the wheel. Like above the boot may need to be replaced but more likely the CV joint is to damaged and the entire half shaft needs replaced.
Damage to the CV joint can through the half shaft out of balance. This will cause excessive vibration at the wheel. The inner CV joint seldom fails but when it does the symptom is excessive vibration. Like the outer CV joint if caught in time the grease and boot can be replaced. Typically if the joint is damaged to the point of causing vibration it needs to be replaced.
CV joints transfer the torque from the transmission to the wheels so that the vehicle can move forward. Damaged CV joints will not only affect the quality of the drive, they can break and cause a dangerous situation. Rear wheel cars without independent suspension have differential in the rear axle. The differential transfers the rotational torque of the driveshaft to the wheels. The differential also has the ability to transfer load through delivering different rotational speeds to each wheel.
The health of your differential much like your automatic transmission and manual transmission is dependent on the level and quality of the lubricating fluid. The differential uses gear oil. Low or deteriorated gear oil can cause gear whining.
If the differential howls only during deceleration then it is likely that the pinion-bearing preload has loosened. If the howling happens are multiple speeds accelerating or decelerating the gears are out of alignment or warn.
